How other countries marked GAW 2010

Belgium

The Big Lesson and promotion of the 1GOAL campaign was held in 12 schools on 20 April. A delegate for the Prime Minister gave a speech during the week highlighting the campaign. 

Denmark

Later this week Danish goalkeeper Stephan Andersen will meet the Danish Development Minister Søren Pind, and together they will kick off the 1GOAL Campaign at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then, just after Global Action Week, on 29 April, the coalition will work with the largest school soccer tournament in the world to promote 1GOAL at the event. 

Italy

The Italian coalition organised a press conference in Rome last week at the Campidoglio, in order to launch the 1GOAL Campaign. Representatives from the Italian institutions, football ambassadors, Parliament and the Minister of Foreign Affairs attended the event. On the 20 April around 2,000 children were involved in the Big Lesson.

Luxembourg

In Luxembourg the coalition has partnered with the sportive league of the primary schools and plans to have an event with around 600 children running under the slogan of 1GOAL. During the event the children will sign the 1GOAL petition and invite their parents to do the same.

Nepal

On 25 April a television discussion programme will be aired on major television channels focusing on the Education For All theme, with audience members partaking in a question and answer session with the Minister of Education. A live, interactive radio programme was also aired today on FM stations involved in the Radio Regional Network of Mid-Western Development Region. The discussion focused on Global Action Week and its relevance in Nepal. 

Niger

1GOAL was launched in Niger this week with a press conference attended by officials, students, civil society and the media. On 20 April 2010 a conference on financing education took place, and similar activities have been held in the country’s eight regions. 

Pakistan

An animated 1GOAL poster is being displayed at intervals on LCD screens in the capital cities of three provinces this week, namely Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. The coalition has also produced an Urdu song for the 1GOAL campaign, which has received radio coverage and can be viewed at (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IxapgxDcyk ). Schools across the country are taking part in Global Action Week activities, and a one-hour radio programme on education was aired today.

Spain

Yesterday more than 500 students attended a ceremony in Malaga to launch Global Action Week and the 1GOAL campaign. During the ceremony the students took part in a number of activities, including face painting,  and soccer games. Malaga Mayor D. Francisco de la Torre, attended the event.

The Gambia

The Gambia held its Big Lesson on 20 April with 15 Members of Parliament in attendance, including the deputy speaker, and international soccer star Abdou Jammeh (T-Boy). In addition, the coalition yesterday launched a partnership to promote the 1GOAL campaign with leading bank ECOBANK.

United States

As part of Global Action Week, Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D Westchester / Rockland) today introduced the Education For All Act of 2010 (EFA Act) at a press event on Capitol Hill. This landmark legislation would help achieve universal basic education for every child in the world by 2015. Film star Jessica Alba, Co-Chair of the 1GOAL: Education For All campaign in the US, joined Congresswoman Lowey to launch 1GOAL. Simultaneous 1GOAL events will occur across the US during the week, bringing together teachers, students, celebrity spokespersons, soccer teams, and other education advocates to teach the lesson and support Education For All.
